Marion collected the numbers of every restaurant in the area that would deliver to the room, so by the time he rang the desk bell his support system h1ad consisted of four pizzerias, two reasonably sanitary-looking Chinese places, a Jamaican jerk joint, a very decent hot wing shack, and, what seemed like a great stroke of luck to Marion, the Crestview Diner, which was open to Marion’s proposition for a special arrangement; normally, no delivery, but the proprietor, a man called Jabir, informed Marion that he had in his employ a legally licensed-to-drive busboy who was happy to set off on deliveries if Marion promised to tip well. Marion promised. Then he took a room on the second floor of the Motel Americana. 201.

Chapter 6. The Knee

Intro.

Thank you for finding the Motel Americana Podcast. If you’re enjoying the show, please consider helping it to continue to run by clicking the support link at Motel Americana Podcast.com or by finding us on Patreon.

If you’re already familiar with the show, you’ll know that these stories are based upon the writings of Oscar Garret, a kid who lived at the Motel Americana in the 80’s and who bugged the rooms. The audio surveillance footage that Oscar captured clearly served as the source material for his semi-fictional writings, and those writings serve as the source material for the audio drama that’s presented here.

A full account of my encounter with Oscar and how I came into possession of his writings and audio footage can be found in episodes one and two. Wherever possible, I have integrated the original surveillance recordings into the narrative.

Which is the case with The Knee. Though this is the sixth episode to be released, it was actually the first I produced. It was the first because the text is so faithful to the verbal exchanges Oscar’s bugs captured, and so it was the easiest to sort through and assemble in a way that made any sort of narrative sense in the audio format.

Which smacks ironic because given the nature of the story you’re about to hear, making sense is just about the last phrase I’d have foreseen using in an introduction to it.

Why The Knee is the sixth episode to be released instead of the sixth bears some explanation.

Danger almost remembered inscribing the kid’s copy, that glassed over look they all get in their eyes while he’s doing it, ten bucks a pop. What had he’d written in this one’s? He’d been alternating all day between Use great care when playing hopscotch with a unicorn and Never underestimate the negotiating power of good hygiene. Looking at the kid now, he decided it was probably the latter. He thought he caught a whiff. He knew with certainty that he’d written Love, Danger in every one of them. Sometimes, though, he’d omit the comma.

[4] Dream Writers – Room 74

The solar storms are wreaking havoc across the country, but perhaps nowhere have they been felt as strongly as at the Motel Americana, where a troubled man called Lang has just checked in. Everywhere he turns he hears a mechanical voice– incessantly sputtering from TVs, droning on every radio station, spilling ceaselessly over the phone lines. He’s been trying to ignore it, but he can’t anymore. He finds that it’s been describing intimate details of his life, a life he may have misunderstood entirely.
